As lacrosse, softball and crew all begin their preseason practices, Wellesley’s winter sports teams are getting closer to the end of their regular seasons, with some gearing up for post-season play.

Squash

No. 21 Squash (13-5) had some highs and lows this past week. On Tuesday Feb. 9 they defeated Boston College 8-1. The match celebrated the team’s two seniors, Gabriella Wynne and Kate Loftus, for their commitment to the Wellesley Squash program. This match was their ninth consecutive victory. On Saturday Feb. 13 the Blue’s streak came to an end when they lost to Colby College, ranked 20th. The Blue’s regular season has ended, but they will pick up post-season play on Friday Feb. 19 when they attend the CSA Women’s Team Championship at Yale University.

Basketball

The Blue had a big win against Mount Holyoke on Saturday Feb. 13, to improve to a record of 4-17 overall. Senior forward Chelsi Scott had a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. The Blue will take the court again on Wednesday Feb. 17 to host the Smith College Pioneers. The game will be a part of the annual Play4Kay, a national initiative to raise awareness and funds for women’s cancer research. Additionally, this event will coincide with Wellesley’s annual Student-Athlete Appreciation Day where there will be opportunities to win prizes and celebrate the Blue student-athletes.

Track & Field

On Friday, Feb. 12, eight Wellesley Track & Field members competed in the annual David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University’s Track and Tennis Center. Isabella Narvaez set a new school indoor record in the 400m dash with a time of 57.41. The Blue was back in action again Saturday, Feb 13 when the Distance Medley relay team competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. The relay team, comprised of seniors Sharon Ng and Priyanka Fouda and juniors Isabella Narvaez and Sonja Cwik, were fifth in their heat with a combined time of 12:08:28. Across town, other members of Blue Track and Field competed at MIT’s Gordon Kelly Invitational. Top performances came from seniors Carolyn Chelius and Heather Smith in the mile, placing second and tenth, respectively. Next, the Blue will tackle the New England Division III Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Middlebury College.

Fencing

The Fencing team was last in action Saturday, Feb. 6  when they earned four victories at the third Northeast Fencing Conference, hosted by Smith College. The Blue will take to competition again on Saturday, Feb 20 when Wellesley College hosts the NEIFC New England Championships beginning at 10 a.m..

Swim & Dive

The Swim & Dive team had a good week of practice as they prepared for the upcoming NEWMAC Championships. The Championships will be held Thursday, Feb. 18 through Sunday, Feb. 21 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
