Athletics Update 12/4/18

From the basketball court to the swimming pool, Wellesley had a successful weekend of competition, with every team improving their record. Three athletes — Jessica Wegner ’22, Helen Andersen ’19 and Cathy Chen ’19 — set program records.

Basketball fell to Emerson College 73-56 on Nov. 28, but rebounded quickly, beating Mount Holyoke College 66-28 on Dec. 1. The team is now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Against Emerson, Caitlin Aguirre ’20, who was recently named NEWMAC Basketball Offensive Athlete of the Week, tallied a team-high 17 points. In the same game, Emily Kopp ’20 scored 10 points and Valentina Morakis ’22 added nine more. In the Mount Holyoke game, Wellesley’s first conference win of the season, Aguirre repeated her success with another 17-point game. Alyssa Cho ’21 tacked on 10 points and five rebounds. Daisy Ella Johnson ’22 had seven points, two assists and four steals. The Blue’s next bout is on Dec. 5, where they will face off for a second time against Emerson.

Swimming and Diving headed to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational this weekend, where they competed against host college MIT, Bowdoin College, Keene State College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Simmons College, Tufts University and Wheaton College. The Blue took fifth place with 424 points. On Nov. 29, Hannah May ’21 and Jessica Wegner ’22 recorded season-best times and a set of fifth-place finishes. Wellesley also finished seventh in the 200 free relay and 10th in the 400 medley relay. Ingrid Henderson ’19 and Emma Roberts ’22 took 12th and 17th places, respectively, in diving. On Dec. 2, the final day of competition, Wegner took first place and set a program record in the 100 fly, racing through the event in 56.44 seconds. The Blue will return to action Jan. 10, when they will race against Babson College and the United States Coast Guard Academy at home.

Track and Field opened their season at the Smith Winter Classic on Dec. 1. Three Wellesley athletes — Helen Andersen ’19, Cathy Chen ’19 and Tatenda Rameau ’20 — registered National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III qualifying marks, with Andersen and Chen also setting program records. Anderson recorded 13.72 meters in the weight throw and 11.21 meters in the shot put, taking first in both events. Both of these marks set new records for the Blue. Chen’s record-setting time was 9.60 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles, where she placed second. She also competed in the 200 meter dash, where she placed 12th. Rameau’s qualifying marks were in the 60 meter dash, where she finished in 8.10 seconds and took fourth place, and long jump, where she took second with a mark of 5.23 meters. The Blue races again on Jan. 19 at the Wheaton Invitational.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, Fencing will return to the strip with a dual meet against Tufts and Harvard University. The team is currently 16-4 overall. Brie Maurer ’20 holds a 49-8 record in foil and Julia Calventus-Coveney ’21 is 40-5 in epee. After this meet, Blue Fencing will return on Jan. 20 at Cornell University.
