News in Brief – 11/2

Course registration

Spring 2023 course registration is set to occur next week from Nov. 8-11. Each class year will have a window from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to register for spring courses, in order of seniority. Spring course selections can be found on the Wellesley Course Browser at courses.wellesley.edu. Additionally, Wintersession registration will begin on Nov. 4.

Stepsinging

On Oct. 20, 2022, the Wellesley Alumnae Association held its first in-person step singing event since pre-COVID. Stepsinging has been a Wellesley College tradition since 1899 and is open to students of all class years. Additionally, according to Darcy Kupferschmidt, assistant director of the Alumnae Association, who presented at Senate on Oct. 17, stepsinging today grew out of a practice in the 1950s where students would write and perform songs about Wellesley College after church service. Kupferschmidt said that Wellesley students were able to write and submit their own songs as well. Stepsinging happens twice a year at the College: once after convocation and again in the spring on the last day of classes. The event was attended by over 70 students.

Class of 2025 class tree

Every year since 1879, the sophomore class plants a tree to convey their connection to Wellesley College. The 2025 Class Tree Planting took place on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the east side of the Houghton Chapel. The Class of 2025’s tree is the Caroline Halesia Monticello Arnold Pink. At the planting ceremony, Dean Sheilah Shaw Horton, Dean Kelly Lewis, and President Paula Johnson gave speeches, as well as students on the Class of 2025 Council. Students in the class of 2025 participated in this tradition by writing their wishes on paper tags and tying them to the tree.

Hillary Clinton Institute

The Hillary Clinton Institute was announced by an Academic Council Representative at Senate on Oct. 17. According to the representative, the Institute is an on-campus proposal that would create civic engagement opportunities for sophomores.

The computer science department celebrated its 40th anniversary with an event on Saturday, Oct. 29 in the Science Center. The event included social events and panels with professors and alums of the computer science department. It also included a competition for current students’ creative work.

Textile disposal ban

Beginning Nov. 1, Massachusetts has banned the disposal of mattresses and a number of textiles, including clothing, bedding and shoes, that are not contaminated with certain types of foreign matter, including mold and bodily fluids. Massachusetts residents may take unwanted textiles and mattresses to designated disposal sites, where the fibers will be recycled.

Taylor Swift “Eras Tour”

Taylor Swift, who recently released her tenth album, “Midnights,” announced her first tour since the “Reputation Stadium Tour.” The “Eras Tour,” exploring all eras of Swift’s music, will include two nights in Foxborough, MA at the Gillette Stadium on May 19 and 20, 2023, the weekend of Wellesley’s 2023 Commencement. Presale tickets for Capital One cardholders and registered verified fans will be on Nov. 15, and the general sale time will be on Nov. 18.
