Commemoration of the Great Fire to hold iPad lottery
The College will give away two iPads in a lottery during the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Great Fire on Monday, March 17. Students can enter the lottery by reading aloud a letter written after the time of the Great Fire or writing their own letter about the Commemoration. Almost 100 years ago, the original Wellesley College Hall building caught fire early in the morning. No one was hurt, but the College lost many objects in the fire. Later that day, the faculty, staff and students gathered in the Houghton Memorial Chapel. The Commemoration will replicate this gathering in the chapel on March 17 by serving breakfast and hosting a capella performances beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until 10 a.m.
Wellesley co-hosts Relay for Life for fourth year with MIT
This Saturday, Wellesley College and MIT will co-host the fourth joint Relay for Life beginning at 6 p.m. at the MIT Johnson Athletic Center Indoor Track. Relay for Life is a nationwide overnight fundraiser run by the American Cancer Society to honor cancer survivors and raise awareness. Currently, 62 Wellesley/MIT teams made up of a total of 728 participants have raised over $500,000 to go toward the American Cancer society. Food, games and entertainment will be provided throughout the course of the event.
Amnesty International celebrates International Women’s Day
For the first time at Wellesley College, Amnesty International will celebrate International Women’s Day. The group plans to hold a day-long conference on Saturday, March 8. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m. Layli Miller-Muro from the Tahirih Justice Center will give the keynote address. The Tahirih Justice Center is a non-government organization (NGO) that provides legal services and social and medical service referrals to immigrant women and girls fleeing from their home countries because of gender-based violence. The conference will offer workshops and panels throughout the rest of the afternoon, including a panel on intersectionality and a talk on working at an NGO as a woman.
Hiring committees seek student participants
The search committees responsible for finding a new dean of religious and spiritual life and an associate dean of students seek students to take part in the hiring processes. The positions are open to all Wellesley students. The search committee for a dean of religious and spiritual life would strongly prefer a current junior to apply. The hiring committee for the associate dean of students will have one position fulfilled by the Student Organizations and Appointments Committee and another position fulfilled by the open application process.
