Dear Wellesley,
My name is Margaret Huai (she/her/hers), and I am a rising junior double majoring in Political Science and American Studies. I am running to be your next Political Engagement Chair, the Cabinet position that chairs the Committee for Political Engagement (CPE).
I have been active in CPE since Fall 2022 through the Events and Newsletter Committees. I was elected to serve on the 2023-2024 CPE E-Board as the Discussions Chair, producing questions to foster meaningful political discussion and debate to begin CPE meetings.
Through these roles, I have learned how to create a safe and inclusive space at CPE for all students as we discuss many heavy political topics. I also know the logistics of planning signature CPE events and distributing the CPE Newsletter The Update.
Beyond CPE, I have been heavily involved in Wellesley College Government. My first year, I was a Senator for Wellesley for UNICEF. I am also your 2023-2024 CG Cabinet Secretary-Treasurer. Thus, I am aware of how to utilize Senate resolutions, ballot initiatives, and communications to facilitate political advocacy efforts. I have a proven track record of doing so on issues ranging from supporting other 7 Siblings student governments on gender inclusivity and MIT’s student government on ending the practice of unpaid public sector internships.
As your Political Engagement Chair, I promise to:
-
Conduct outreach and engagement on political activism with our peer institutions’ student governments, including the Seven Siblings institutions, Babson, Olin, and MIT, and the Boston Intercollegiate Government. There is power in demonstrating strength in numbers and solidarity among students to achieve advocacy goals, which I believe is pivotal to CPE’s mission.
-
Organize weekly visits to town halls, the Massachusetts state legislature, and courthouses. CPE can further political awareness of the three branches of government by facilitating students witnessing live political and legal decision making through visits during legislative sessions on the Massachusetts House and Senate floor and legal proceedings. I hope these experiences will inform students in formulating and streamlining their advocacy efforts as part of the next generation of changemakers.
-
Create a weekly digest including non-partisan explanations of domestic and international political events. I will apply my digest skills developed as your current Secretary-Treasurer to ensure events included can be understood easily and promote campus-wide political awareness.
Thank you for your time and consideration! Voting will take place via WEngage on March 5th. For more information, check out http://tinyurl.com/wcgelections24 or email any questions to to [email protected].
Sincerely,
Margaret Huai (she/her/hers), Purple Class of 2026, [email protected]
