Senate Report: 4/23

Senate Report

Gender neutral language to be included in College Government Constitution

Senate voted to approve changes to the College Government constitution that would make its language gender neutral, replacing all instances of she/ her pronouns with they/them pronouns. Senate views this as a step towards inclusion in College Government as well as a way of demonstrating student support for gender neutral language at the College as a whole. The CGP will present these changes to the Board of Trustees at the April 26 meeting to demonstrate student support for further changes.

CGVP to serve as interim president

Following the special election’s inability to yield a College Government President, outgoing President Maryam Khan ’18 announced that the position would be taken over in the interim by College Government Vice President Saafia Masoom ’19. Masoom, who won the VP seat in this year’s special elections, adjourned her first Senate meeting.

Wellesley contract with Peter Pan buses under review

Dean of Students Sheilah Horton announced that Wellesley will be reviewing its contract with Peter Pan Bus lines. She said that in light of student complaints, service will be prioritized over cost when considering any new transportation contract, which may be with a company other than Peter Pan. The announcement was met with surprise by senators. When asked whether the new contract will affect the price that students pay, Horton said that the negotiations were too early in the process to determine anything yet. She remains hopeful that the new contract will bring a transportation option with better service to Wellesley students.
