Wellesley Cross Country won fourth place at the 2018 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Saturday Oct. 27 at Smith College. Blue was beat by first place MIT, runner-up by WPI and third-place Coast Guard and edged out Smith College, who finished fifth. Grace Cowles ’21 earned All-Conference honors, finishing ninth overall with a time of 19:49. Blue’s Ariana Marks ’22 finished 18th with a time of 20:15 followed by Maya Bradbury ’22 in 20th with a time of 20:29. Blue races again on Saturday Nov. 10 at Bowdoin college for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Northeast regional.
Wellesley Volleyball swept WPI in the quarterfinals of the 2018 NEWMAC Volleyball Championship on Oct. 30 supported by strong performances by Lauren Gedney ’21 who recorded a match-high 15 kills on 30 attempts. Yasmine Reece ’19 had 10 kills and Michelle Li ’19 had a match-high 32 assists and eight digs, earning Blue an early lead that they never relinquished. Unfortunately, Blue then was defeated by Springfield College in the semifinals on Nov. 1, knocking them out of the tournament. Springfield had a fast start with a 10-1 lead in the first set and was able to shut down Wellesley’s offense. They rode their lead to a 3-0 sweep of Blue. Though they were knocked out of NEWMACs, Volleyball has earned an at-large selection to the 2018 NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship and will head to Babson College to play Wentworth Institute of Technology for a first-round match this Friday, Nov. 9 at 5:30pm.
Wellesley Crew won their tenth consecutive Seven Sisters title at the 2018 Seven Sisters Championship Regatta on Sunday Oct. 28 on the Charles River. Wellesley scored 27 points with a second place Varsity 8+ finish with a time of 13:59.3 and two top three boats in the Second Varsity 8+ race. Blue finished in first place (14:27.0) followed by Smith (14:46.5) and a second Blue boat with a time of 15:22.2. Wellesley also finished in second and third place in the Novice 8+ race with times of 15:22 and 16:08, respectively.
Wellesley Swim and Dive began their season with a rallying 144-143 victory over NEWMAC rival Wheaton College on Saturday Nov. 3 after trailing 127-111 after Event 13 with only two events left. Blue’s Jessica Wegner ’22, Shelby Ripp ’22 and Sunny Chiang ’19 finished in the top three spots in the 200 IM to boost Wellesley to the win following other top finishes by first-place Hannah May ’22 in the 200 Free and Peyton Wang’s ’22 first-place finish in the 100 Free. Wellesley will host Simmons at home on Saturday Nov. 10.
