Millionaires in Massachusetts continue to grow in number
The Massachusetts Department of Revenue has released a report based on 2016 tax filings that shows that the number of residents or couples who have a gross adjusted income above $1 million is growing. The exact number is 16,115, more than double the number of million dollar earners in 2004. The distribution of these millionaires is not evenly distributed, with the highest concentration and number found around Boston. Wellesley has the third amount in both raw number of millionaires (873) and per capita (30 per 1,000 residents). Boston has the highest number with 2,158 people earning an income over $1 million but Weston has the highest concentration, 46 out of every 1,000 residents earns more than $1 million.
Wettest fall on record with more to come
If you feel like the rain has not stopped, you are not wrong. The last time it went 5 days without raining was back in the beginning of September. The Blue Hill meteorological records are some of the oldest in the country, going back to the late 19th century and show that this will be the wettest fall on record, with over 27 inches of rain between September 1 to November 30. It has rained for 9 out of the 12 Tuesdays in this period. Globe Correspondent Dave Epstein attributes this precipitation to the position of the jet stream, which often brings low pressure and storm systems. The jet stream has not really changed much and so keeps bringing storms our way. Epstein says he also does not really see this changing, with the pattern continuing into December.
Michelle Obama stops by Dorchester Boys and Girls Club before wowing TD Garden
Former first lady Michelle Obama was in town to continue her book tour, An Intimate Conversation with Michelle Obama. This is to publicize her new book, Becoming. Before speaking at TD Garden, she was in Dorchester meeting with young women at the Boys and Girls Club. The members of Black Girls Rock sat down with Michelle Obama to have their own intimate conversation before Mrs. Obama went on to talk at a sold out show. At the same arena where her husband delivered his Democratic National Convention speech that launched his national political career back in 2004, she walked out to roaring fans. She talked to former NPR host Michele Norris for a little over an hour, delivering humorous and heartfelt anecdotes as well as sage life advice.
Recreational Marijuana finally available in Massachusetts
After the original goal of opening recreational marijuana stores by July 1st was pushed back, two stores, the first in the state, opened last Tuesday, November 22. Leicester, Massachusetts and Northampton, Massachusetts are the first two towns to have open and functioning recreational marijuana businesses. The stores have both been very busy, especially so on Small Business Saturday as people from all across the state came to the stores to wait in long lines and buy marijuana. Neither store ran out but Cultivate, the Leicester store, had to cut off the line in order to close on time.
