Wellesley Basketball played against Worcester State University (WSU) on Sunday, Nov. 25 in a non-conference loss to the Lancers. The Blue began the game 6-0 but soon lost their lead, and at the end of the first quarter the Lancers had overtaken the Blue for a score of 14-10. The Blue entered halftime trailing 26-20 after back-to-back baskets scored at the end of the half by WSU, but in the third quarter, the Lancers outscored the Blue 24-7 and continued to build momentum to a final score of 55-36. Alyssa Cho ’21 led the Blue with 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting and four rebounds and Emily Kopp ’20 had a team-high five rebounds. Caitlin Aguirre ’20 also finished with nine points, five assists and four rebounds in a game where the Blue was limited to just 29.1 percent (16-of-55) shooting from the floor. Basketball is now 3-1 on the season and will take the court again on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. for its first New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match against Emerson.

Wellesley Fencing went 4-2 at the first Northeastern Fencing Conference meet of the season on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Blue defeated the University of New Hampshire (UNH), MIT, Sacred Heart and Brandeis following a strong undefeated performance by Julia Calventus-Coveney ’21 who had a 15-0 record in epee. Now 16-4 on the season, the Blue also saw convincing finishes by Brie Maurer ’20 and Lucille Tsao ’21, who each finished 14-4 in foil, and Lauren Park ’21, who led Wellesley in sabre with a 12-3 finish. Wellesley lost two matches on the day: the first to Boston College and another to Brown University after a four-round win streak. The Blue will compete again at Harvard University on Dec. 4 against Harvard and Tufts University.

Wellesley Swimming and Diving earned first place in 13 of 16 events, propelling them to a 202-98 victory over Mount Holyoke College in a NEWMAC meet on Saturday, Nov. 17. The Blue moved to 3-0 on the season and is ranked No. 10 in the latest College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Regional Poll. Wellesley’s effort was led by Hannah May ’22, who won three individual victories in the 200 Fly, 100 Free and 500 Free with times of 2:18.97, 55.79 and 5:32.48, respectively. May was followed in the 100 Free by Jessica Wegner ’22 and Paulina Gonzalez ’22, who finished in second and third. Gonzalez also finished first in the 1000 Free in 11:20.38, more than ten seconds ahead of Mount Holyoke’s Ashton Bliss. The Blue also took first in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free, 200 Breast, 50 Free and 100 Fly, and ended the meet with a victory in the 400 Free Relay. The Blue will compete again on Friday, Nov. 30 for the first night of the MIT Invitational.
