PERA hosts youth sports clinic in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day
On Feb. 6, Wellesley’s Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics (PERA) celebrated the 33rd annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. In the past, PERA has invited the school and local community to a basketball game where they recognize the achievements of the “Wellesley Blue” teams from the past year. This year, PERA continued their past traditions and added a youth sports clinic for local girls. The clinic was run by Wellesley coaches and members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and boasted attendance from more than 60 area students. The girls who participated in the clinic had the chance to play soccer, volleyball and basketball, and received Wellesley Athletics t-shirts.
Emma Cohen, PERA’s coordinator of facilities and events and the primary organizer of the clinic commented, “We were thrilled by the turnout this year, and we’re hoping it continues to grow next year.”
Journalist Jane Mayer to deliver 2019 Wilson Lecture
On Mar. 19, 2019, Jane Mayer will give this year’s Wilson Lecture on “Fake News and Alternative Facts: The War on Truth.” The Wilson Lecture was endowed by Carolyn A. Wilson, a journalist and war correspondent and a member of Wellesley’s class of 1910. Mayer has been the chief Washington correspondent for The New Yorker since 1995. Prior to her time at The New Yorker, Mayer served as the first female White House Correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. In addition, she is a best-selling author of five books. Her articles have covered various prominent and controversial topics in the areas of politics, national security and culture. Stacie Goddard, professor of political science and Irene Mata, Barbara Morris Caspersen associate professor of humanities and associate professor of women’s and gender studies, were responsible for suggesting Mayer as speaker for this year’s Wilson Lecture and said, “Knowing what we know of the importance of a free press, we can’t think of a better way of honoring Wilson’s legacy than to invite Mayer, a fellow journalist and war correspondent, to give the 2019 Wilson Lecture.”
Professor Katharine H.S. Moon to deliver 2019 Distinguished Faculty Lecture
Professor of political science and Edith Stix Wasserman chair of Asian studies Katherine “Kathy” Moon, will be delivering the College’s Distinguished Faculty Lecture for this year on Apr. 1 at 4 p.m. Her lecture is entitled “Friending Your Enemy: Dialogue with North Korea, Engaging the Other.” It will cover the current relationship the United States has with North Korea, and contrast it with South Korea’s attempts at rebuilding its relationship with its neighbor. Professor Moon is an established expert on the U.S.-Korea alliance, East Asian politics and inter-Korean politics, and has published three books on those subjects. Her latest book “North Korean Lives Matter” is about North Korean diaspora and their narratives. Professor Moon’s lecture will be held in Collins Cinema followed by a reception in the Davis Museum lobby.
