Winter Carnival Returns
On Feb. 8, the Wellesley campus tradition of the Winter Carnival returned for the first time in 20 years. The event featured hot cocoa, a miniature ice skating rink set up in the plaza next to the Davis museum, a large inflated snowglobe, and an ice sculpture of a penguin. The Winter Carnival, in various iterations, has existed on campus since 1901. This year, organizers hoped to arrange for skiing and sledding opportunities, but were unable to do so due to the slushy weather. The 2019 Winter Carnival was sponsored by the Office of Residential Life in collaboration with Student Housing, the Office of the Dean of Students, the Office of Student Involvement, the Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Athletics, Wellesley College Archives, Wellesley Fresh and the Wellesley Outreach Collaborative, according to the Wellesley College website.
WASA’s Africa Week brings movies, discussions, and activities to campus
This week, Wellesley African Students Association (WASA) is presenting a series of events titled “Africa Week.” After an open meeting of WASA on Sunday Feb. 16, the week’s activities continued with a head wrap tutorial and a screening of the film “The African Doctor”- a French film directed by Julien Rambaldi that follows the story of Seyolo Zantoko, a young doctor of Congolese descent in France who struggles with his family to be integrated into a small white, rural village- on Monday, Feb 17. For the remainder of the week, WASA will be offering events such as AfroPubNight and a dance party on Saturday.
Weismann Foundry to host Blend+ x Tech event
The Weissman Foundry, a BOW (Babson, Olin and Wellesley) collaborative ‘maker-space’ on Olin’s campus, is hosting a series of events each month to give “students interested in in technology and its interfaces with video games, VR/AR, tech education, biotech & health, AI, entrepreneurship, and ethics,” a chance to meet and collaborate. These are breakout events from the Foundry’s flagship event “Blend” last month. This first one will focus primarily on technology, while future events will focus on other aspects of the Foundry’s work. The event will be held this upcoming Saturday from 5:30-7:00 P.M. at the Weissman Foundry, and food and drink will be provided.
