Wellesley track and field sent eight athletes to Brunswick, Maine to compete at the New England Division III Indoor Championships on Saturday. Helen Anderson ’19, Maya Bradbury ’22, Cathy Chen ’19, Grace Cowles ’21, Eva Paradiso ’20, Ava Shipman ’21, Elizabeth Wegman ’20, and Ava Yokanovich ’22 represented The Blue with strong finishes by all. Cowles ’21 took tenth in the mile with a time of 5:13.14, Bradbury ’22 set a new personal record (10:28.99) and finished eleventh in the 3000m and Eva Paradiso ’20 placed 17th in the mile with a time of 5:24.88. Anderson ’19 also had a strong performance in the field and finished 13th in shot put and 16th in the weight throw. The Blue will compete again this Saturday, March 2 for the Tufts Last Chance Qualifier.
Wellesley swim and dive won fifth place out of ten at the 2019 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship this past weekend at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Wellesley finished behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wheaton College, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and Springfield College. Jessica Wegner ’22 set the program record for the 50 Yard Fly (25.99) and earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors in the 100 Fly on Saturday. Several other Wellesley swimmers had top ten finishes in their races including Kayleigh Svensson ’20, Sunny Chiang ’19, Hannah May ’21, Danielle Peterson ’20 and Peyton Wang ’22.
Wellesley basketball concluded their season on Tuesday, February 19 after losing 75-38 in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC Women’s Basketball Championship to second place Smith College. The Smith Pioneers went into the half at 41-17 and the Blue were limited to 15-of-46 in shooting during the game. Zojajha Ayub ’19 led Wellesley with 13 points and five rebounds, followed by Valentina Morakis ’22, Caitrin Spottiswoode ’22, and Emily Kopp ’20 who each scored five points. The Blue finishes their season with an overall record of 8-15 and their first NEWMAC postseason match since the 2013-2014 season.
Wellesley tennis opened their season this past weekend at the Seven Sisters Championships at Vassar College. They competed against Smith College and Mount Holyoke College on Saturday and finished with dominating performances. Wellesley did not lose a single match against either competitor in either doubles or singles competitions and headed into Sunday’s matches tied for first place with Vassar. They continued their hot streak into Sunday’s matches, defeating Bryn Mawr 4-1 and host Vassar 4-1. Their performance earned them the 14th Seven Sisters title and Blue’s first Seven Sisters Championship win since the 2014 season. Justine Huang ’19 earned her fourth career NEWMAC Athlete of the Week award in her 3-0 performance this weekend and Lily Chu ’21 and Cinji Lee ’22 were awarded NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week following their 2-0 finish. Wellesley Tennis will now continue the season and travel to New York University on Saturday, March 9.
