Wellesley lacrosse kicked off their season with a 16-7 win over Eastern Connecticut State University on March 7 that featured Dacia Persky’s ’19 100th career goal. She scored a career-high 11 points on nine goals and two assists, followed by Eleanor Mallett ’22 with three goals and five assists and Ella Matticks ’21, Kat Gallison ’21, Olivia Strobl ’19 and Lena Engbretson ’19 who all finished with one goal each. Wellesley trailed 5-1 just before the half when they scored seven straight goals to make the score 8-5 at halftime. Wellesley continued their momentum into the second half and outscored Eastern Connecticut 8-2, earning the Blue a convincing win.
They returned to action on Saturday, March 9 and lost to Tufts University in a shutout 21-0 game that saw 14 different Tufts players score. Tufts made a statement early in the game with the first goal scored 17 seconds into the contest that was 15-0 at the half. Wellesley was outshot 43 to five in the game, and Wellesley goalkeeper Chloe Tucker ’19 made a game-high six saves and recorded a game-high four ground balls. Lacrosse plays their next game on Wednesday, March 13 against Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Wellesley tennis lost both their matches this past weekend, falling 8-1 against New York University (NYU) and 7-2 against The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). Wellesley’s only win on Saturday against NYU was by Selena Peng ’20, who defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-4. Sunday’s first victory over TCNJ was won in a doubles match by Justine Huang ’19 and Selina Peng ’20 with a score of 8-3, and the second was a singles match won by Libby Chang ’22 over TCNJ’s Navya Yemula. Wellesley dropped to 4-2 on the season and will begin New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play against Wheaton College on March 19.
Wellesley fencing faced off at the 2019 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Northeast Regional tournament at Vassar College hosted by Columbia University on Sunday, March 10. The Blue was led by Brie Mauer ’20 who won ninth overall in foil and Julia Calventus-Coveney ’21 who finished 12th overall in epee. The regional operated on four rounds of elimination pools in foil, epee, and sabre. In sabre, Yasemin Ersen ’22 finished 18th and Lauren Park ’21 finished 20th, but were both eliminated in round three. Molly McLachlan ’21, Lucille Tsao ’21, Cassandra Cronin ’19, Sam Wolstenholme-Britt ’22 and Gaby Inchoco ’22 all advanced to round two in their events before being eliminated. The Wellesley fencing team finished their ’18-’19 season strong with a program-best 23-5 record in team completions.
