Wellesley track and field competed at the Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College on April 13 and 14. Wellesley finished 18th overall in the team standings and was led by strong performances by Cathy Chen ’19 and Helen Andersen ’19. Chen  placed seventh in the 100m hurdles for a time of 16.04 — a New England DIII qualifier and just 0.41 seconds away from the school record set by Chen last week at the Coast Guard invitational — and finished sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:07.66. Andersen  finished in ninth place in the hammer throw and won sixth overall in the shot put with a New England DIII qualifying distance of 11.59m. The Blue will travel to Bates College for the Aloha Relays on Saturday, April 20 in their last meet before the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships on April 27.

Wellesley lacrosse lost to Mount Holyoke College 15-12 on Saturday, April 13 in their fifth NEWMAC match of the season. The Blue are 5-8 overall on the season and 1-4 against NEWMAC teams. Mount Holyoke outscored the Blue 10-4 at the half and the Blue surged in the second half to outscore the Lyons 8-5. Unfortunately, Wellesley could not make up the six goal deficit they faced from the first half despite scoring four straight goals midway through the second half. Overall, Mount Holyoke outshot the Blue 39-24 and Wellesley’s goalkeeper Lorna Li ’19 made nine saves on the day. The Blue will host the Coast Guard on Wednesday, April 17 to continue their NEWMAC play.

Wellesley tennis defeated Springfield College on Saturday, April 13 in a 9-0 victory that advanced the Blue to 10-5 overall and 4-0 in NEWMAC play. Wellesley had a convincing showing in each of their matches, winning many by a wide margin. In doubles play, the score of each match was 8-1, 8-1 and 8-3, while singles play also demonstrated Wellesley dominance over their opponents. Wellesley then faced off against Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Sunday, April 14 and dropped their first NEWMAC competition all season. A final score of 7-2, Wellesley’s two victories came in doubles play when Michaela Markwart ’22 and Justine Huang ’19 defeated MIT 8-6 and Lily Chu ’21 and Michelle Shen ’22 defeated MIT 8-3. The Blue drops to 10-6 on the season and 4-1 in NEWMAC matches. Wellesley tennis returns to action on Wednesday April 17 against Babson College where they look to reestablish their dominance in NEWMACs.

Wellesley crew competed twice this past weekend, the first in Medford, Massachusetts where Varsity Eight took third place after a series of races against Tufts, Bates and Wesleyan. The Blue lost to Wesleyan in the opening race and in the consolation final, Wellesley was able to finish ahead of Tufts with a time of 6:54.8 to secure their position. Crew raced again on Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond in a race that featured five of the top 13 teams in the CRCA/Division III Coaches Poll, according to Wellesley Athletics. The Varsity Eight (V8+) finished third in the opening race behind Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and Bates with a time of 6:43.78, ahead of Trinity and Rhode Island Institute of Technology. The Blue also finished third in the Second Varsity Eight with a time of 7:03.07 and came in just behind Bates for a second-place finish in the Third Varsity Eight race (7:14.03). However, Wellesley Fourth Varsity Eight were able to secure a victory over WPI in 7:18.8. Wellesley crew will return to action on Saturday, April 20 on the Charles River in the team’s final regatta before the NEWMAC Championship on Saturday, April 27.
