Boston to see record cold temperatures this week
This Wednesday Nov. 12 saw record low temperatures throughout the Greater Boston region. Although temperatures climbed up near 60 degrees on Tuesday, they dropped off to the low 30s, breaking a record that was set in 1874. And Boston wasn’t the only region affected — 99 record lows were set to be tied or broken nation-wide, according to Bill Karins, an NBC meteorologist. The cold temperatures also brought in some snow flurries on Wednesday afternoon. The rest of the week will see temperatures rise slightly, with highs of 34 and 42 degrees for Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Local legislator and DACA recipients hold press conference as Supreme Court hears arguments
On Nov. 11, Rep. Katherine Clark held a press conference in Cambridge as the Supreme Court began hearing arguments on the legality of Trump’s decision to wind down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. More than 8,000 immigrants in Massachusetts have benefited from the program since it was founded by former president Barack Obama in 2012. Currently, DACA protects from deportation almost 660,000 immigrants who came to this country as children. Standing alongside DACA recipients, Rep. Clark said that they represent “the very best of America.” The Supreme Court just started their hearings and will make a decision by June 2020.
Local school for the deaf celebrates 150th anniversary
The Horace Mann School for the Deaf is celebrating its 150th anniversary as a dual language designated school in the Boston Public School System. It opened on Newbury Street in 1869 as the first public day school for the deaf in the United States, and it remains the only one in Massachusetts. There are currently 78 students attending the Horace Mann School, who range in age from eight to 22. The school started as an oral school and now recognizes both English and American Sign Language as languages of instruction. Principal Maritza Ciliberto told CBS Boston, “We’re very proud and our community here in our school and also the deaf and hard of hearing community at large, they’re very proud of that history.”
