The first time we hung out, we went on a run. It began to pour, like a weather advisory level type of pour, before we had planned to meet. We decided to go anyway because that’s just the type of spontaneous person we decided to be together or maybe pretended to be for each other. The sky was milky white, the fog leading us into a surreal space. By the time we reached the ocean and ran into it fully clothed, we were already soaked. By the time we reached the ocean, I was already in love. I’d mistake being in love with the moment for being in love with him many times after that first memory. But just for a second, feeling alive and numb as the freezing Pacific rushed around me, that feeling, it was all mine.
