Chaubunagungamaug Nipmuck denied environmental review request of Long Island
On Feb. 24, a Suffolk district court ruled against an environmental review of Boston’s Long Island requested by the local Chaubunagungamaug Nipmuck tribe. In the fight against the opioid crisis, Mayor Marty Walsh proposed that a rehabilitation center be placed on the island. However, the island, and others surrounding it, were historically used to imprison indigenous people. The Chaubunagungamaug Nipmuck tribe hopes to ensure that no burial sites or Native American remains are built upon and that the deaths that occurred on the island are respected. Boston officials say they are hoping to conduct an archaeological survey in place of an environmental review.
