CSA mxmtoon event proposal
Michelle Shen ’21, vice president of the Chinese Students Association, presented the CSA’s proposal for funds for their spring lecture, which would occur over Zoom on either May 8 or May 15. The lecture would involve a Q&A with the Chinese American singer-songwriter mxmtoon in addition to a possible performance. Potential Q&A topics include her identity as a biracial Asian American woman in America, especially in light of recent anti-AAPI hate crimes, as well as the inspiration for her music and the difficulties of having such a large platform. Non-Wellesley students will be allowed to attend. The proposal must be approved by Senate, which will vote on it next week.
Outdoor space proposal
Last week, Sophia Ashebir ’21 presented a student proposal through the Recreational Grant Fund to create a gathering space on the expanse of grass behind Stone-Davis Hall and the Chapel. Senate was due to vote on this proposal, but quorum was not met by the end of the meeting. The vote will be conducted externally and the results will be shared shortly. Ashebir and Eashaa Jampala ’21 added that the space will not be reservable.
Roller Rink Proposal Presentation
Due to the success of the Retro Roller Rink event put on by SBOG and Walenisi over spring break, SBOG is partnering with SOFC to put on another roller rink event before the end of the semester. Ashley Amoabeng ’21, DOOCA, and Alexis Rivett ’21, Student Bursar, presented this joint proposal and mentioned that they would be expanding the event by paying student workers to aid in set-up, tear-down and making sure the event is running smoothly. As a result, having more student workers will allow for more people to come to the event. SBOG and SOFC members will have priority in applying for the positions, but other students will be able to apply as well. Riya Balachandran ’24, Claflin senator, asked if attendance priority could be given to those who could not come to the previous event; Amoabeng answered that it would likely be mentioned in the email and enforced via the Honor Code.
Dean’s Corner
Dean Horton reminded students that health and safety is still a top priority on campus despite the increasing number of vaccinated students and nicer weather, as the number of daily COVID-19 cases in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts remains within the thousands. She also asked all students to take the technology training found within the MyWellesley student portal as a result of an increased number of new phishing attacks targeting college students. This is the training that was previously required of first-year students; the College would ask that all students retake it every year to remain informed.
In a previous section of the meeting, Sarah Sansón Hernández ’21 asked if Wellesley would be covering shipping costs for remote graduating seniors that have been using campus storage. During the Dean’s Corner, Horton addressed this question and said yes, but emphasized that it is critical that seniors’ home addresses are up to date in Workday. She also reminded all students to check and update their emergency contact information in reference to the email sent out on Friday about the test of the emergency notification system.
