Stepsinging
On Oct. 20, 2022, the Wellesley Alumnae Association held its first in-person step singing event since pre-COVID. Stepsinging has been a Wellesley College tradition since 1899 and is open to students of all class years. Additionally, according to Darcy Kupferschmidt, assistant director of the Alumnae Association, who presented at Senate on Oct. 17, stepsinging today grew out of a practice in the 1950s where students would write and perform songs about Wellesley College after church service. Kupferschmidt said that Wellesley students were able to write and submit their own songs as well. Stepsinging happens twice a year at the College: once after convocation and again in the spring on the last day of classes. The event was attended by over 70 students.

At the planting ceremony, Dean Sheilah Shaw Horton, Dean Kelly Lewis, and President Paula Johnson gave speeches, as well as students on the Class of 2025 Council. Students in the class of 2025 participated in this tradition by writing their wishes on paper tags and tying them to the tree.
