First-years welcomed at Flower Sunday

Flower Sunday took place Sunday. The theme of this year’s service was “Exploring the Light.” Annabel Beerel, the interim dean of religious and spiritual life, helped lead the event. Another newcomer, Carol Bate, associate dean of students, participated as well.

Wendy Chen ’14 wins most promising young poet award

Wellesley alum and former Editor-in-Chief of  The Wellesley News Wendy Chen ’14  recently won the Aliki Perrotti and Seth Frank Most Promising Young Poet Award, an honor given to aspiring college poets under the age of 23. She wrote her poem, “They Sail Across the Mirrored Sea,” in her junior year at Wellesley in a poetry seminar taught by Frank Bidart, Andrew W. Mellon professor of humanities and professor of English.

President’s Office to explore  gender fluidity as a women’s college

During her convocation address last Tuesday, President H. Kim Bottomly emphasized the importance and value of an all-women’s education. Her address coincided with the announcement that Mount Holyoke College will admit transgender women. Currently, Wellesley has no policy on the admission of transwomen. Bottomly released an announcement on last Friday titled “Reflecting on Convocation: Being a Woman in the 21st Century.” The President’s Office will host a variety of events to explore the meaning of women’s colleges at a time when gender is becoming more fluid.
