Two more members of administrative staff to leave the College

Donna Ng, senior associate provost for budget and planning, and Kate Salop, assistant vice president and executive assistant to the president, will leave Wellesley College in January. Ng will take the role of vice president for business affairs and treasurer at Scripps College, while Salop will become a senior administrative dean at the Brandeis’s International Business School. Meanwhile, Carolyn Slaboden has been promoted to assistant vice president for Human Resources and Equal Opportunity. Slaboden joined the College in 1989 and is a key advisor to senior staff members.

Students and faculty support victims of Typhoon Haiyan

Typhoon Haiyan hit Visayas, the central region of the Philippines on Nov. 8. The storm was one of the worst recorded in history and affected more than 11.3 million people. In addition to hosting a lecture, Club Filipina has been collaborating with students’ family members in the Philippines to raise money to rebuild homes for the Knights of Columbus, an organization with many connections in the Philippines.

Professor Marjorie Agosín receives global mental health and human rights award 

Professor of Latin American Studies and Spanish Marjorie Agosín was awarded the Dr. Fritz Redlich Global Mental Health and Human Rights Award for the beauty of her poetry and her ability to help readers understand suffering and healing from trauma. Agosín has previously been awarded the U.N. Leadership Award for Human Rights and the Gabriela Mistral Medal of Honor from the Chilean government.

College to consider methods to fill two staff roles

The College been gathering information to help make decisions regarding the roles of associate dean of students and dean of religious and spiritual life and intercultural education. Consultants are conducting focus groups with members of Multicultural Presidents Council, Multifaith Council, house presidents and College Government Cabinet to get a sense of student life while staff members in the division of Student Life provide input as well. Dean of Students Debra DeMeis will present different ways to fill these roles to the senior administrators and give a recommendation to President H. Kim Bottomly during Wintersession.
