With the arrival of the red class of 2028 on campus, Wellesley College’s landscape is filled with so many fresh, young faces. In this class, we have future human rights attorneys, future writers of the next great American novel and even future doctors. In particular, there are many young Wellesley students with aspirations to heal the human body, taking on the noble profession of medicine. Our new crop of first-year students walk around this historic school with hope and a genuine desire to make the world a better place. That is, until they discover the economics department.
These days it seems like you can’t go a single minute without bumping into a first-year who introduces themself as pre-med. But how many of them will actually go on to take the MCAT? Here’s seven easy questions to figure out if you’re chatting with a doctor-in-training or someone who will have a job title like “Senior Market Analyst.”
- Are they taking Econ 101 to “fulfill a distribution requirement”?
- Do they have a favorite province in Italy?
- Are they aware that they must take Orgo 1 AND 2?
- Do they know what consulting is?
- Do they think that consulting is a real job?
- Would they look weird holding a stethoscope?
- Have they requested you on LinkedIn?
- Did their mom (’98) major in econ?
If you answered yes to four or more of these questions, then congrats! You’ve just met the next big face of investment banking. At least some of us will achieve financial success with a liberal arts degree.
