As of Tuesday, April 1, 2025 The Wellesley News will be disbanding the Arts & Culture Section. The Editorial Board attributes this decision to the defunding of arts at Wellesley College and at institutions of higher education around the country.
“There just isn’t enough art to report on,” a former Arts & Culture writer familiar with the Editorial Board’s decision making process shared. “Now that we have AI, students are spending their time on the important things. Like PSets. And thinking of mean things to say on Sidechat.”
The Wellesley News has previously reported on suffering from a dearth of reporters for the Arts & Culture Section, with the job being known as an infamous resumé sinker.
“Headhunters have been known to set job applications on fire when they see ‘Arts & Culture writer’ on a resumé,” Bariane Anker, a representative from Career Education shared. “Which, as you can imagine, has become increasingly dangerous now that most applications are digital. In the past we’ve recommended that students who are so inclined to waste their time writing about art write under a pseudonym.”
An email to Arts & Culture writers with the subject line “Fork In The Road,” urged newly section-less students to “pick up a useful skill” for their own “financial wellbeing.” “We know that most of you aren’t hot enough to marry rich,” the email continued “and, honestly, we’re worried about you.”
Administration (since there isn’t that much going on and they have a lot of time on their hands) lent their vocal support to the News for this decision. “By pushing these losers to pick up lucrative interests like Econ or STEM, we are confident that The Wellesley News is inspiring the next generation of donors and trustees.”
As Charlie XCX always says: “They don’t make statues of critics.” They don’t really pay them either.
