Emergency Academic Council meeting scheduled to address Peking University relationship
President Kim Bottomly has scheduled an impromptu Academic Council meeting for today in order to discuss the recent dismissal of Professor of Economics Xia Yeliang from Peking University (PKU). Faculty are expected to discuss the future of the Wellesley-PKU partnership as well as the possibility of bringing Professor Xia to Wellesley as a visiting lecturer through the Freedom Project and the Scholars at Risk Network in New York. Bottomly has stated that, although she supports the continuation of the Wellesley-PKU partnership, the future of the cross-cultural partnership depends on the faculty.
Wellesley celebrates Halloween with haunted happenings on campus
For Halloween tomorrow, the Office of the Provost will host the annual trick or treat event in the Academic Council Room on the fourth floor of Green Hall from 6 to 7 p.m. All students are invited and are encouraged to wear costumes. Munger Hall will also host Munger Mash in the living rooms from 7:30 to 9 p.m. with candy, dancing, crafts and movies.
Board of Trustees considers divestment, Wellesley 2025, shadow grading
In addition to meeting with members of Fossil Free Wellesley (FFW) about their divestment proposal, the Board of Trustees were also updated last week on the status of the architect selection for the Wellesley 2025 renovation in Pendleton West and Munger. The Board was given a tour around Schneider, the first building to be renovated as part of the Wellesley 2025 constructions. The Board also deliberated over the implementation of a new shadow-grading policy, which will allow first years in their first semester to view their grades without those grades appearing on their academic transcript.
Shruti Laya opens for one night only on Saturday
This Saturday, the Wellesley Association for South Asian Cultures (WASAC) will host Shruti Laya: Vendy in Vunderland in Jewett. The annual culture show will feature performances from students, including South Asian dance performances. South Asian food will be served during intermission and there will be an after party in Punch’s Alley.
