College announces RA and HP stipends
Interim Dean of Students Adele Wolfson announced Friday that beginning in fall 2016, student residential life staff—Resident Assistants (RAs) and House Presidents (HPs)-—will begin to receive payment for their work. The Wellesley Student Leader Action Project (SLAP) had been working towards compensation for student workers this year and student leaders have been bringing attention to this issue for the last five years through the Student Leadership Stipend Ballot Initiative. The committee working on compensation was comprised of Carol Bate, Associate Dean of Students; Kris Niendorf, Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life; Don Leach, Associate Director of Residential Life; Scott Wallace-Juedes, Director of Student Financial Services; Suzanne Barth ’16 and Katelyn Campbell ’17.
New Executive Director and Associate Provost for Career Education Named
President H. Kim Bottomly announced Wednesday that Christine Yip Cruzvergara has been named as Wellesley’s Executive Director and Associate Provost for Career Education and is tasked with reshaping Wellesley’s career services programs. She is the current Assistant Dean and Executive Director of University Career Services at George Mason University and has also worked at Georgetown University, George Washington University and the University of Maryland. Cruzvergara’s appointment coincides with a period of change for Wellesley’s career services, which is being revitalized through the College to Career initiative and recent alumnae donations as outlined in the recently announced Wellesley Effect campaign. Cruzvergara will begin her position at Wellesley on Jan. 25, 2016.
Wellesley walks for An Ton
On Oct. 31, Wellesley students walked in honor of An Ton to benefit the Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Before she passed away last year, Ton was an RA in McAfee Hall, a biology major and a WZLY participant. Marchers aimed to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. Wellesley donated 55 seats on the Senate Bus for student participants to attend. Thanks to donations and sponsorships of the participants, the group was able to surpass their fundraising goal of $1,500 and raise $3,080 for the foundation.
Report finds Wellesley graduates have lowest student debt
According to a report released by the Institute for College Access and Success, Wellesley College is a leader in producing students who graduate with relatively low amounts of debt compared to other institutions, and students in the Class of 2014 owed less than half the national average debt. Wellesley ranked among California Institute of Technology and Princeton University as low-debt, highly selective schools that meet full financial need of students. Prospective students can learn what their likely expected contribution would be through Wellesley’s My inTuition cost estimator, which has since been adopted by other schools.
