When will we condemn Islamophobia on Wellesley College’s campus?

As the Wellesley News, we stand in solidarity with the wider Muslim community at Wellesley. We want to bring your attention to a case of Islamophobia that has happened on our campus and has lacked a proper response from our administration.

A banner hung up in the Multifaith Center as part of a vigil held after the Paris, Beirut and Baghdad attacks was defaced with Islamophobic hate speech at the end of last semester.

This had not been shared with the wider Wellesley College community due to an agreement that this would be spearheaded by the administration in condemnation of this unacceptable behavior.

Due to a lack of response, we felt it necessary to share our concerns regarding this incident. We all have Wellesley siblings who are directly affected by this and the lack of conversation around this matter prevents any constructive change from happening.

We ask our Wellesley Siblings to stand in solidarity with the affected community and to realize that Islamophobia exists on our campus and blatantly defies the college’s values.
