Lulu Chow Wang ’66 named as commencement speaker
Lulu Chow Wang ’66 was announced as the this year’s commencement speaker at the Class of 2016 Senior Soiree on Thursday. She founded the investment firm Tupelo Capital Management in 1997 and is the company’s current CEO. Wang was recognized by the New York Times in 2013 as a strong advocate for women in philanthropy. In 2000, she donated $25 million to Wellesley to construct the campus center, which is named in her honor. Wang served on Wellesley’s board of trustees for 18 years and headed the investment committee, the first woman ever to do so. She will be the first Asian-American commencement speaker at Wellesley.
Seniors receive Stanford Calderwood Prize in Public Writing
Through the Calderwood Seminars in Public Writing Program at Wellesley, three seniors have been awarded the Stanford Calderwood Prizes in Public Writing. Eloisa Cleveland ’16 received the Calderwood Prize in Humanities, Adele Clifford ’16 received the Calderwood Prize in the Sciences and Tamar Davis ’16 received the Calderwood Prize in the Social Sciences. To win the prize, an essay has to be nominated by Calderwood Seminar instructors and is then chosen by a faculty committee. According to David Lindauer, Stanford Calderwood Professor of Economics, “The winners of the Calderwood Prizes all select interesting topics, address their audiences and make their points accessible. They draw the reader in, explain why their subject is important and do so with writing that is authoritative and engaging.”
Chicago Wellesley Club Celebrates
The Chicago Wellesley Club celebrated its 125th Anniversary on Saturday. The club held a sold-out event called “The Wellesley Effect – Chicago Style” which included two panels thatdiscussed the Wellesley Effect, a luncheon, a “speed meet” that allowed alumnae to make connections with each other, and an interview with President Bottomly. Chicago mayor Rahm Emmanuel named April 2 “Chicago Wellesley Club Day” in honor of the anniversary. The club is one of the most active alumnae chapters in the country and holds many events throughout the year, including hosting games for its members referred to as “Wellesley Jeopardy!” and participating in community service together.
