College Government Unity Gathering shows campus solidarity
As a response to President Drumpf’s Executive Order placing travel bans on refugees and immigrants from Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Syria, the College Government Cabinet invited all members of the Wellesley community to join in a Unity Walk on Tuesday, Feb. 7 inside the Chapel from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event, organized by President Johnson, the Office of the Provost, the Dean’s office, Wellesley Al-Muslimat and Wellesley Arab Women’s Association, was held to celebrate the diversity of Wellesley’s campus, show support for all members of the Wellesley community affected by the Executive Order and to dispel prejudice and fear. The College Government Cabinet emailed a statement out to Wellesley students to declare its firm solidarity with all those who have been affected by Drumpf’s actions.
College closes due to inclement weather
Last week on Thursday, Feb. 9, Wellesley College cancelled all classes due to hazardous weather conditions. Surrounding areas received between eight and 15 inches of snow, which, combined with heavy winds, resulted in blizzard conditions. Boston Public Schools closed for the day, along with other local schools. Wellesley students used the day to catch up on homework, play outside in the snow and spend time with friends. The college announced that school was cancelled late in the evening on Thursday; the notification was posted to the college’s website. According to Boston’s National Weather Service twitter account, the blizzard was the first in Boston since Jan. 27, 2015.
KSA Culture Show celebrates campus Korean culture
Wellesley’s Korean Student Association will be hosting their annual culture show, Seoul Night Live, on Friday, Feb. 17. Dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Alumnae Ballroom with the show beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m. An after party will be held in Tishman Commons from 10 p.m until 2 a.m. Tickets will be sold for $15 at the door and for $10 presale. Both include free Korean food for dinner and entry to the Culture Show and after party. Seoul Night Live will feature performances by Berklee School of Music’s Ilban Music, Boston College’s AEROdynamiK Dance Crew, Harvard University’s Taekwondo and dance and singing performances by fellow Wellesley students. Tickets to the after party will also be sold separately for $5. Wellesley students get free entry.
Valentine’s Day inspires activities around campus
Student groups around campus used Valentine’s Day as a way to fundraise for clubs and celebrate friendship and love at Wellesley College. The Hoop hosted Date Night 2017 on Monday, Feb. 13 from 7 p.m. to midnight. The event, which offered multiple time slots that were fully booked, offered an exclusive, one-night menu along with regular menu items. The Biology and Biochemistry Club sold science-themed cards at the Lulu Chow Wang Student Center and in Science center on Monday, Feb. 13 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. German Club celebrated the holiday by selling candy bags on Monday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on the fourth floor of Lulu. FreeStyle also sold sweet treats to students by emailing out a google form for Krispy Kreme doughnuts as a fundraiser for the group.
Fundraiser started for Wellesley staff member battling lymphoma
Two Wellesley students, Courtney Peterson ’17 and Nicolette Sharkin ’17, started a GoFundMe account after they learned that Manual, a custodian who works in Clapp Library, has been diagnosed with lymphoma. According to patch.com, the fund is meant to help with Manual’s medical expenses and has raised $4,193 of its $6,000 goal.
