Wellesley student featured on NPR
On Feb. 16, Ashley Funk ’17 and her father appeared on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” Funk, sharing her passion for the environment, was interviewed alongside her father, an ardent Drumpf supporter. The two discussed their concerns for the economy and environment of their native Pennsylvania. While initially the two disagree on climate change, they agreed that local, natural gas jobs in southwest Pennsylvania will benefit their community. Funk explained that although she appreciates the addition of new jobs into their local workforce, she is hesitant to celebrate just yet, noting that “in order to make money people exploit the environment.” After hearing his daughter explain her views on the segment, Funk’s father agreed that bringing life back to the local economy can’t come at the cost of the environment. The segment ended with Funk listing her post-graduation plans; she plans to move back to Southwestern Pennsylvania and continue to fight for environmental causes.
Wellesley’s Upstage presents Machinal
This week, Wellesley College’s Upstage will premiere its spring show, “Machinal,” at the Ruth Nagel Jones theater on the bottom floor of Alumnae Hall. Tickets are free for students at Wellesley, Babson, Olin and MIT. General Admission tickets are $10 and tickets for other students will be $5. The show, written by Sophie Treadwell and directed by Brigitte Demelo ’18, will be performed on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
Student Government launches event calendar for Wellesley
The College Government’s new event calendar was launched this past Monday, Feb. 13. As part of her platform last Spring, College Government’s Vice-President Cece Tsui ’18 promised to create a school-wide calendar where “all organizations could share events for the community and… students could easily reference.” Tsui followed through with this goal by creating the application alongside Grace Hu ’17. The two worked together to complete the calendar, which also was submitted as a project for their 300-level computer science course. The mobile-friendly calendar, which can be found at cs.wellesley.edu/eventscal, is still in its Beta version and is in need of student feedback in order for proper adjustments and improvements to be made. All students can use their personal Wellesley accounts to sign in and post an event to the calendar.
The Albright Institute to host a public dialogue
The Madeleine Korbel Albright Institute for Global Affairs at Wellesley College will host an event called From Exodus to Action: Claiming Our Common Humanity in the Refugee Crisis on Feb. 26, 2017. Secretary Madeleine K. Albright will be in attendance, joined by distinguished experts, to address the current refugee crisis during the daylong symposium. The event will be held in the Alumnae Hall Auditorium. Secretary Albright will give the event’s keynote address at 10:15 a.m., but doors open at 9 a.m. Following the keynote will be two panels: the first, “The Refugee Crisis: History, Ethics, and Current Context,” will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The second, “Beyond Resettlement: A Paradigm Shift to Meet Full Need,” will take place from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
