Hey Wellesley Sibs,
Hope this week’s column finds you well. While we may live in a suburban bubble, we still maintain ties to communities and loved ones both near and far. Feb. 14 marked a tragedy that is heartbreaking and completely preventable. We send our sympathy and care to those affected, their families and those who are no longer with us. The remarkable strength and poise with which students have engaged in activism following the event is inspiring and is something that College Government urges all of us to demonstrate through solidarity.
On March 14, we will take part in the National School Walkout. At 10 a.m. in the Academic Quad, we intend to join the national student-organized call for change in gun control. We urge students, faculty, administrators and staff to take part in this effort. CG also urges those who will be on campus on March 24 to participate in the March for Our Lives in Boston—an interest form was sent via email by the Wellesley College Democrats who are organizing transportation to the event!
This week in Senate, we heard updates on the various dialogues we have had about social life, immigration concerns and student health. I am proud of the work that students, faculty and administrators are engaging in to collectively address what we discuss in Senate. There will be a Town Hall on Inclusive Excellence hosted during community time this Wednesday, Feb. 28 on the fourth floor of Green Hall in the Academic Council Room. It will be led and facilitated by students, like our Multicultural Affairs Coordinator Dina Al-Zu’bi 19. Student feedback is integral in evaluating in-class experiences, and I encourage you all to attend.
A last update on CG Elections: we just wrapped up our info sessions, and this Friday, March 2 is the deadline to submit Statements of Intent to elections-committee-17-18@ wellesley.edu. As a co-Chair, I want to stress that the elections committee (EC) is here to make campaign week seamless and will work with candidates to ensure that the process is fair, transparent and accountable. We have been working closely with our SPEC Chair to ensure that EC is accountable to SPEC as well. Again, this partnership seeks to make the process accessible and transparent. Please feel free to reach out to EC with any questions and concerns. We are here to serve you.
Until next time,
Maryam
