Dudley Square Station to be named Nubian Station

The MBTA announced Feb. 16 that Roxbury’s Dudley Square Station will be renamed Nubian Station. The decision comes two months after Dudley Square, an overwhelmingly African-American neighborhood, was renamed Nubian Square by the Public Improvement Commission after the neighborhood coalition petitioned a city-wide referendum to change the name. The petition did not garner enough votes to be implemented. The referendum’s results suggested overwhelming support for the change from Roxbury residents. The former Dudley Square was named after Thomas Dudley, a known colonial leader and proponent of slavery in Massachusetts. Plans for implementing the name change are underway. Sadiki Kambon, the chair of the Nubian Square Coalition, told the Boston Globe that “It’s a name that reflects, number one, who we are as a people.”

Border Patrol sent to Boston and other sanctuary cities in MA

The Trump Administration recently sent Border Patrol agents to sanctuary cities around the country in an effort to assist ICE in immigration enforcement. Among the cities affected are Boston, Somerville, Cambridge, Lawrence and neighboring Wellesley and Newton. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, among the many politicians to speak out against the recent action, stated, “Policies aimed at sowing division and fear are ultimately counterproductive and harmful not merely to the families and individuals who are targeted but to the broader community of which we are all a part.”

Celtics to Retire Kevin Garnett’s Number

Former NBA player Kevin Garnett will have his number, 5, retired by the Celtics. Garnett, who played for Boston between 2007 and 2013, brought the Celtics to their most recent NBA Finals win in 2008 alongside the “New Big Three,” which consisted of himself, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. In response to the decision, former Celtics head coach Doc Rivers lauded Garnett for his unselfish and team-player mentality.
“He’s the greatest superstar role player ever,” Rivers said. “He was a superstar, but he played his role for the team anyway, somehow. I don’t know how he did that, but he did it.”
