Wellesley professor’s research calls for more math
Assistant Professor of Economics Kartini Shastry has conducted research on high school students’ understanding of money. Studies have demonstrated that American high school students have limited understanding of paying bills, debt and loans. Shastry has found that there is little evidence that financial literacy in students leads to improved financial decision-making. Instead, more math in schools helps, possibly because it allows students to become more comfortable using skills that will later apply to planning for retirement. Shastry’s research has been featured in recent articles in MarketWatch, Forbes and Slate.
Daniels Fellows pursue diverse projects
Pamela Daniels ’59 was a Class Dean at Wellesley College from 1981 to 2000. After her retirement, Wellesley College students, classmates and friends created the Pamela Daniels ’59 Scholarship, which awards $3500 to each recipient. The fellowships are intended to allows seniors to work on projects that they love and consider “a vivid and worthy dream project.” This year six recipients were named. Fiona Boyd ’16, Kimberlee Coombee ’16, Pauline Day ’16, Amelia McClure ’16, Julia Um ’16 and Chloe Williamson ’16 were each awarded the fellowship to pursue projects ranging from Japanese culture to climate change research.
Vivian Pinn ’62 shares the Wellesley Effect in her life
Vivian Pinn ’62 spoke at the Wellesley campaign launch to promote the Wellesley Effect. She addressed the way that Wellesley has affected her life. “If Wellesley had not provided the scholarships, the student loan and work study program, I would never have been able to come to Wellesley, much less been able to graduate,” Pinn said. She mentioned sharing a Wellesley background with other successful women “It is so often that I see women who have excelled in this nation or around the world in politics, in industry in academia, in the arts, as homemakers, as mothers, and I can look and say, ‘She’s a Wellesley Woman’ and then I think to myself and smile quietly and think, ‘I’m a Wellesley Woman, too.’” Pinn’s speech is available on the Wellesley College Youtube channel.
Politico Magazine profiles Wellesley support for Bernie Sanders
Major political publication Politico Magazine covered the small but growing support for president candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) on Wellesley’s campus. The article compared the Wellesley Students for Bernie group and the Wellesley Students for Hillary group, noting the differences in leadership style and general function, calling the former a “well-organized machine.” In the political world, Wellesley is generally known the place where Hillary Clinton found her political voice, delivering the commencement speech in 1969 that put her on the front cover of Time Magazine.
