BostonInno names students’ app a “Boston Mobile Startup to Watch”
Olivia Joslin ’18 and Hannah Wei ’18 recently launched their app Cliqbit, which has been featured in USA Today and the website BostonInno. BostonInno has named Cliqbit one of five “Boston Mobile Startups to Watch.” According to its founders, Cliqbit is an app founded on the premise of comedy and accessibility. It is intended to combine popular elements of applications whose purposes are grounded in permanence like Facebook and apps who seek to limit the time accessibility of posts, like Snapchat. The app allows users to control the permanence of posts, whether it be posted for a day or forever, and also who can see the post, certain “cliqs” or all users. Both Joslin and Wei have stated that the app is meant to be “lighthearted” and its premise is to share comedic moments among friends or with a greater following.
Al-Muslimat and Hillel host Avi Shabbat
Al-Muslimat and Hillel hosted Avi Shabbat last Friday in the Multifaith Center. Avi Shabbat is a program started by the parents of Avi Schaefer, a Brown University student who dedicated his work to promoting the coexistence of Muslims and Jews. He was killed by a drunk driver at age 21. The day included Jummah prayers and lunch at midday and Shabbat services and dinner in the evening.
Alumna commissions pin in honor of the Albright Institute
Joanne Murray ’81, founding director of the Albright Institute, presented Madeleine Korbel Albright ’59 and President H. Kim Bottomly with pins commemorating the Albright Institute at a reunion dinner for Albright Fellows last month. The creation of these pins is meant to memorialize the success of the Institute in Albright’s famous pin collection, which were featured in a Davis Museum exhibit last year. Murray stated that the design of the pins were meant to fit with the goal of “for there to be women around the globe working to create a more stable, peaceful world.” This is the second time that pins have been commissioned in honor of the Institute, the first time being in 2010 to honor the first generation of fellows. Silversmith and goldsmith John C. Harwood designed both sets of pins.
Al-Muslimat and the Middle Eastern Studies Department host lecture on Islamophobia
There was a lecture about Islamophobia on Tuesday in the Pendleton Atrium, given by Amer Ahmed, Ed.D from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The lecture is titled “Addressing Islam and Islamophobia: Dispelling Myths to Break Down Barriers” and will focus on dispelling myths regarding Islam. This lecture follows the community conversation that occurred last Wednesday at the Multifaith Center discussing Islamophobia and discrimination on campus. Both events come in the wake of the announcement that a banner in the Multifaith Center was defaced with hate speech directed towards Muslims and Islam during finals period last semester.
