Wellesley Blue Swim and Dive picked up their first win of the season before Thanksgiving Break against Mount Holyoke. Wellesley earned multiple victories from sophomore Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.), first year Danielle Peterson (Livingston, NJ), sophomore Karen Wang (Holmdel, NJ), sophomore Cathy Chen (Parsippany, NJ), and first year Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, CA) against the Lyons. Wellesley competes this weekend at the MIT Invitational where they will face off against teams from MIT, Keene State, NYU, Tufts and Wheaton. This will be Wellesley’s last meet of the fall season. Following this meet, the team will continue practicing in preparation for a full schedule over Wintersession. During the month of January, Wellesley Swim and Dive will compete in four meets, including the Seven Sisters Championships and the senior day meet against NEWMAC rivals, Babson and Coast Guard on Jan. 5. Wellesley’s Chiang, has also been named NEWMAC Co-Swimmer of the Week this past week. Chiang recorded three individual victories and a relay victory against Mount Holyoke, and we look forward to seeing more from Chiang and the rest of the team in the coming months.
Wellesley Squash is currently undefeated on the season with two wins against Boston College and Colby College. Blue Squash is ranked 23rd nationally as they head into the rest of their regular season. The Blue handily defeated Boston College on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in their first match of the season with eight wins coming from across the ladder. Later in the week, on Nov. 19, the Squash team upset #19 Colby College 5-4. Sophomore Sarah Zhang (Lexington, MA), junior Haley Connor (Boston, MA), first year Eunbie Coe (Los Angeles, CA), junior Meredith Curry (Medfield, MA), sophomore Lumi Kinjo (Toyoko, Japan) and junior Audrey Fok (Great Neck, NY) picked up straight set wins in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth spots on the ladder. Wellesley Squash will rematch Colby College on Jan. 28. Looking ahead, the squash team will face #29 Connecticut College and Williams this coming weekend.
Blue Basketball has opened their season with a 3-1 start, which is their best start since the 2010-11 season. The team won the University of St. Joseph Tip-Off Tournament after beating Mitchell College and Fitchburg State University. The Blue also beat Simmons, before losing to Worcester State on Sunday, Nov. 27. Worcester State maintained a consistent lead throughout the contest, but Wellesley fought back from a 28-18 deficit at halftime. Wellesley competed hard in the third and fourth quarters, outshooting Worcester State 34-33. The Blue were led in scoring by first year Caitlin Aguirre (El Paso, TX) with 12 points and junior Chelsea Brown (San Jose, CA) with two assists. The team pulled down six rebounds during the game. This week, the Blue will face off against WPI in their first conference game of the season.
