Albright Institute holds annual symposium focused on refugee crisis
On Sunday, Feb. 26, the Albright Institute held its annual symposium. This year, the symposium was titled From Exodus to Action: Claiming Our Common Humanity in the Refugee Crisis and focused on the global refugee crisis. The day-long event featured a keynote address given by Madeleine Albright ’59, for whom the Institute is named, and two panels. Along with Albright, speakers included former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou and U.S Assistant Secretary of State Anne Richard. In addition to the symposium, Albright held a meeting on campus on Saturday, Feb. 27, attended by several cultural and religious organizations, such as Al-Muslimat, Wellesley Arab Women’s Association, Wellesley African Students Association and the Multifaith Council to discuss the recent executive order on immigration.
President Johnson announces visit of Hillary Clinton ’69
On Tuesday, Feb. 28, Wellesley College President Paula Johnson issued an email invitation to the Wellesley Community to attend a Q&A session with Hillary Clinton ’69. The session will be held in Alumnae Hall from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 2. The event is open to the Wellesley community only and will be ticketed. For those who cannot receive tickets or attend the event, it will be live-streamed on the Wellesley College website. Additionally, there will be overflow seating available in Tishman Commons, where a designated live streamed viewing will be held. In her email, President Johnson stated that before the Q&A session she will lead a conversation with Secretary Clinton and “take part in a meaningful, unfiltered dialogue with a remarkable alumna and leader.”
Camara Phyllis Jones ’76 delivers distinguished Kenner Lecture
Camara Phyllis Jones ’76, a family physician, epidemiologist, senior fellow at the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine and the former president of the American Public Health Association, was chosen to give a Kenner Lecture at Wellesley on Monday, Feb. 27. Her lecture, given at 4:30 p.m. in Tishman Commons, was co-sponsored by the Hyunja Laskin ’88 and Jeffrey Kenner Endowed Lecture Fund of the Madeleine Korbel Albright Institute for Global Affairs and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department, and was titled Achieving Health Equity: Tools for a National Campaign Against Racism. Throughout her lecture, she focused on the reality of racism preventing health equity in the U.S.
Smith College breaks fundraising record for women’s colleges
Smith College has announced that in its most recent fundraiser, it raised $486 million for the college. This breaks the old record held by Wellesley, which in 2005 raised $472 million. Smith announced that $130 million from the fundraiser will be dedicated to student financial aid. Wellesley will attempt to regain its position as number one with its newest fundraising campaign launched in 2015, which aims to raise $500 million.
