Wall Street Journal publishes letter to the editor by Bottomly
President Bottomly’s recently published letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal responded to an opinion piece by Lenore Skenazy about the Sleepwalker statue at Wellesley. Skenazy’s op-ed, “Fear and Loathing at Wellesley,” claimed that Wellesley students who spoke out against the statue were “betraying feminist ideals.” Bottomly countered Skenazy’s claim by stating that women’s rights include the right to speak out about what disturbs them and to not be silenced. Bottomly further wrote that critics of the reaction to “Sleepwalker” are following in the tradition of silencing women’s voices and opinions. Bottomly concluded by stating of the students who spoke up: “None of them have any need to man up, and I hope and trust, for women’s sake, that none of them will ever shut up.”
CWS moves Alumnae Network to LinkedIn
The Center for Work and Service (CWS) officially launched its online professional networking platform on Linkedin yesterday. The alumnae network contains over 30,000 people, half of whom already network on Linkedin, the largest social media platform for professional and career networking. The site already has 20 subgroups separated by industry to allow alumnae to share referrals, information and advice. According to a survey distributed last year among alumnae, 60 percent of alums have held top-level positions within 20 years of graduation and 19 percent serve as C-level executives with 35 years. The network will also make it easier for students to reach out to alumnae.
Administration to host third town hall of academic year
Today, the administration will host its third Town Hall of the academic year in the Academic Council room on the fourth floor of Green Hall, during community time from 12:30 to 2:15 p.m. This open forum will focus on changes to the College operating budget structure as well as updates on the Campus Renewal projects, previously known as Wellesley 2025. The administration may also address other questions submitted by students, faculty and staff.
College to present Alumnae Achievement Awards tomorrow
The College will host the Alumnae Achievement Awards ceremony tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. in Alumnae Auditorium, followed by a reception in the ballroom. C. Tracy Orleans ’70 and Eva Sommaripa ’63 will receive this high honor given by the College to alumnae who have achieved excellence and distinction in their fields. Orleans is a nationally recognized behavioral scientist and public health advocate. Her areas of work include tobacco control and prevention of childhood obesity in populations with disproportionate risk, including the elderly and poor. Sommaripa owns an organic herb garden, “Eva’s Garden,” which has been supplying New England restaurants for the past 40 years. She began supplying locally grown produce long before the locavore trend began.
