So the Oscars happened. Yes, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock. I will not be mentioning said moment anymore because:
- This issue has been discussed and meme’d to no end and I doubt I can offer any new ideas or jokes.
- I actually only have one reason, I guess.
You may be wondering, “Deyra, didn’t you predict who would be nominated for certain categories at the Oscars?” To that I respond, yes, dear reader, I’m glad to know you’re such a big fan that you remember that article (sending you a kiss). I was mostly right? Okay, yes but I actually missed a few huge movies which I hadn’t gotten around to watching, so I’d give myself a C+ or B-.
There were many surprises with who won at the ceremony, including the historic win of Troy Katsur for “CODA,” which made him the first Deaf actor to win best supporting actor. Speaking of “CODA,” the film took home the biggest award of the night with best picture, which was a win for the deaf community. Ariana DeBose also made history, becoming the first queer Latinx actress to win best supporting actress for her portrayal of Anita in “West Side Story.” Jessica Chastain won best actress, beating Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), Olivia Coleman (“The Lost Daughter”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”) and Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”). Best actor went to Will Smith for his portrayal of Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams, in “King Richard.” Jane Champion became the third woman to win best director, joining Chloe Zhou and Kathryn Bigalow.
Where are the snubs? I mean … everyone is going to think there were snubs every year. Kristen Stewart’s performance in “Spencer” was highly favored but in the end lost out. Will Kirsten Dunst, after years of being underrated, ever get her Oscar one of these days? “Dune” not winning for costume design was a surprise, especially when “Cruella” took the prize instead.
Around Oscar time there’s the constant debate of “Are the Oscars even worth anything?” People will say the show goes on too long, they don’t award the “best” movies anymore, it’s all popularity, the complaints go on. But we still come back, we sit through the whole ordeal and think “it could’ve been worse.”
