Club football has resumed for all of Europe’s biggest teams, and there have already been major twists and turns! First, the Champions League quarter finals kicked off with Bayern Munich’s exciting 2-1 win against Real Madrid, accompanied by Arsenal’s hard-fought 1-0 win against Portuguese club Sporting CP. The matchweek continued with European giants Barcelona and Liverpool both suffering 2-0 defeats to Atlético Madrid and current Champions League winner PSG, respectively. A red card for Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsí in the 44th minute shifted Barcelona’s entire momentum, while Liverpool struggled to keep possession and create any meaningful chances throughout the whole game (what can I even say anymore …).
Over the weekend, there were many interesting match results across multiple leagues. In La Liga, Barcelona earned a 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid (why couldn’t they have done this 4 days before?), while Real Madrid fell to Mallorca 2-1, thanks to a very late goal from striker Vedat Muriqi. This result saw Barcelona extend their lead at the top of the table to a whopping nine points!
Speaking of title races, current Premier League leaders Arsenal shockingly lost 2-1 to Bournemouth, while Man City won 3-0 against Chelsea to cut the gap between the two table leaders to just 6 points. Man City have played one less game than Arsenal, so this gap could shrink even further. The two face off against each other on Sunday, and I genuinely think the winner of this game will go on to win the league. I’m so excited for this game and this part of the season in general (when Liverpool aren’t involved, then I’d be stressed)!
In the rest of the league, Liverpool defeated Fulham 2-0 (FINALLY), with goals from Salah, who recently announced his departure from the Reds at the end of the season (don’t hmu…), and youngster Rio Ngumoha. West Ham’s 4-0 win against Wolves saw Spurs fall into the relegation zone, and they failed to produce a response when they lost 1-0 to Sunderland the next day. As a rival fan, it’s gotten to the point that I honestly feel so bad for them. We are nearing the end of the regular season, and I’m excited for all of the drama it will bring!
