The start of a new semester can be daunting, with new classes, assignments and schedules. The transition from summer’s relaxation to the intensity of classes can feel overwhelming, especially in the first few weeks of the transitional period. Carving out time for recreation can be a method of alleviating this stress. Starting this week, Wellesley’s recreational events will be in full swing, providing students with opportunities to stay active, socialize, and take a break from the classroom.
The KSC hosts open rock climbing nights. Sessions begin Sept. 12 and continue through the semester. Open three times a week, open rock climbing is easy to fit into a busy schedule. Hours are Tuesdays 7 – 9 p.m., Thursdays 7 – 9 p.m. and Fridays 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. The rock wall welcomes students of all skill levels, whether they are first-time climbers or experienced athletes in search of a new challenge. Rock climbing engages both the physical body as well as the mind. Requiring strength and concentration, this activity ties together the active side with the mental for a unique combination.
For people who prefer activities beyond the gym, the KSC rental center makes equipment easily accessible. The center is open Tuesdays 5 – 7 p.m., Fridays 4 – 7 p.m. and Saturdays 1 – 3 p.m. Students can borrow sleeping bags, tents, lawn games, and other useful gear for an afternoon in the quad or a weekend trip. Many students may not own individual gear or be able to purchase it, so the rental center allows students to plan activities they may not have otherwise.
If you’re looking for a chance to get on Lake Waban, open boathouse hours run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 12:30 – 2 p.m. The boathouse provides direct access to the lake with free boat rentals. Time on the lake can act as a mental reset.
From the KSC to Lake Waban, Wellesley’s recreational events provide students with necessary outlets for managing stress and finding a healthy balance. Taking time to recharge isn’t a distraction from academic goals, but rather a way to support them.
